Static Shock Writers Nab Hollywood Award

Eleven winning writers, representing a diverse slate of work, were announced this week at the HUMANITAS Prize luncheon before an audience of over 340 members of the motion picture and television industries, held at the Hilton Universal Hotel. These prestigious prizes and $105,000 were awarded in eight categories for film and television writers whose work "entertains and enriches the viewing public."

In the Children's Animation Category, Dwayne McDuffie (teleplay & story) and Alan Burnett (story) took home the $10,000 prize for their Static Shock episode, "Jimmy."

In "Jimmy," the teenage superhero "Static" discovers that even his super-powers can not protect those close to him from gun violence. The episode was cited for "condemnation of the use of guns and violence to solve problems."

Since its inception in 1974, the HUMANITAS Prize has presented over 215 prizes and dispersed over 2 million dollars in prize money to television and motion picture writers whose work honestly explores the complexities of the human experience and sheds light on the positive values of life.

Winners of the HUMANITAS Prize have included: Steven Bochco (Hill Street Blues); Alan Alda (M*A*S*H); Horton Foote (William Faulkner's OLD MAN); Steven Zaillian (Schindler's List); Tim Robbins (Dead Man Walking); Matt Damon and Ben Affleck (Good Will Hunting); Aaron Sorkin (Sports Night, The West Wing), and Kenneth Lonergan (You Can Count on Me).
