Free Comic Book Day Update:
Disney Participates In FCBD 2
By Brian Jacks

The Free Comic Book Day Committee has announced that Gemstone Publishing has joined the comic book industry's Free Comic Book Day initiative as a Silver Sponsor. Its chosen title will be Walt Disney's Donald Duck Adventures.

Article continued below advertisement

More than fifty years ago, Boys and Girls March of Comics released a shoe store giveaway comic book that featured Carl Barks' now-classic Donald Duck adventure, "Maharajah Donald." The people who acquired that free comic book didn't realize it at the time, but it was destined to become one of the most valuable and sought-after collectibles in today's market.

Gemstone recently acquired the license to publish Disney comics, and has decided to kick off its new line of Disney comic books with "Maharajah Donald" as its offering for Free Comic Book Day. If you were to buy a mint copy of the original book now, it would cost you more than $7,000.00, as listed in the latest edition of The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide, but this is your opportunity to own it for the original cover price: nothing.

Also included is the original two-page back-up story, "The Peaceful Hills" and the original March of Comics front cover, which is reprinted on the back cover of the Gemstone giveaway.

"This is truly a case of 'better late than never,'" joked Steve Geppi, Publisher & President of Gemstone Publishing. "We were still negotiating final details on the deal to publish Disney comics as the Committee was preparing to launch Free Comic Book Day 2003, so we couldn't be involved in the initial release of information. But thanks to the hard work of the folks here at Gemstone and the help and understanding of our friends at Disney, we've been able to put together something truly special for this occasion. I look forward to seeing thousands of Mr. Barks' wonderful comic book being given away on May 3!"

Gemstone's new line of Disney comics will hit stores beginning in June 2003, making the Free Comic Book Day edition a perfect introduction to the line.
