The Pitch:
A Discussion With Azad By Brian Jacks
03.05.03
Welcome to Slushfactory.com's weekly feature, "The Pitch," where creators "pitch" you their newest, upcoming project in hopes of persuading you to give it a chance.
Your name: Azad Title of book: Sammy: Tourist Trap Publisher of book: Image Comics Ongoing or miniseries: 4 issues + online free strips Other collaborators on book: Just little 'ol me. Expected on-sale date: Feb 26th.. that means NOW!
(1) Fill in the blanks: My name is Azad and I am best known for...THIS interview :-(
(2) What is your book about?
Sammy is one of the world's best thieves. However, he's also the unluckiest bastards to ever hit the comic page. His only saving grace is his partner in crime "Lucky," a stray black cat who never leaves his side.
On parole barely 2 weeks, Sammy takes a gig in sunny Acapulco for some quick cash. The heist was a success and everything went smooth. All that's left is to hook up with a liaison to get paid, and get OUT... but nothing's ever that simple for Sammy, is it?
(3) What is the origin of this project, secret or otherwise? Give us the origin story.
Ever wondered what happens to the hapless dolts in Urban Legends after the story ends? I do. The Tourist Trap series evolved from asking myself: "Well, what would happen next?"
The 4-issue series is crafted around one particular urban legend that everyone should be familiar with. The difference is Sammy's story doesn't end the way the legend ends. The legend is taken off on a tangent, to an absurd extreme while staying the course as a traditional crime story.
(4) Aside from the promise of tall dollars, what drew you to this project? Why now?
I wanted a way out of my high-paying job as a storyboard artist at an animation company to chase my lifelong goal: to be a washed up, disgruntled out-of-work comic artist.
And why now? I've been working on Sammy since 2000, so it's not so much about "Why Now" as it is "IT'S 'BOUT F%!*KING TIME!"
(5) Why should a reader pick your book over, say, lunch on a given day? Pitch away.
Because I have your parents in my basement. Make me rich or I make you an orphan.
(6) Anything else you'd like to add?
Lots more Sammy adventures to come. Many of them will be available FREE the official Sammy home at www.guerrilla-comics.com which will also feature lots of exclusive goodies like animation and behind-the-scenes stuff.

Aside from Sammy, there's a damn good proposal by B. Clay Moore (Hawaiian Dick) sitting on my desk that I should be doing artwork for. And a spy epic which I'm writing but undecided if I'll draw as well.
Oh, and I love taffy!
